ISRO Joins Elite Club as Fourth Country to Master Space Docking with SpaDeX
Jan 16, 2025, 07:28 AM
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), marking a historic milestone in India's space program. The mission involved the docking of two satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), which were launched into a 475-km circular orbit on December 30, 2024, aboard the PSLV-C60 rocket. The docking process, which involved precise maneuvers from a distance of 15 meters to a 3-meter hold point, was successfully executed on January 16, 2025. This achievement positions India as the fourth country globally, after the United States, Russia, and China, to master space docking technology. Following the docking, ISRO confirmed that the satellites were functioning as a single unit, with plans for undocking and power transfer checks in the coming days. The success of SpaDeX is seen as a crucial step for India's future space missions, including Gaganyaan and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, and is expected to enhance India's capabilities in space exploration and satellite servicing.
