Israeli Forces Detain Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya in Gaza Raid on December 27, WHO Demands Release
Dec 30, 2024, 08:42 AM
Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was detained by Israeli forces during a raid on the facility on December 27. The Israeli military confirmed his detention, suspecting him of being a Hamas member. The raid involved the burning of sections of the hospital and the forcible removal of patients and medical staff. The World Health Organization (WHO) has demanded the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya, noting that Kamal Adwan, the last major functioning hospital in northern Gaza, is now out of service. Patients from Kamal Adwan were transferred to Al-Shifa Hospital and the Indonesian Hospital, which is itself out of function. The WHO also reported that 240 individuals were detained during the raid, and other hospitals in Gaza, including Al-Ahli and Al-Wafa Rehabilitation Hospital, have been attacked and damaged, emphasizing the severe threat to the health system in the region.
