Marco Rubio Becomes First Hispanic Secretary of State After Unanimous Senate Vote
Jan 21, 2025, 11:00 AM
Marco Rubio has been unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the 72nd Secretary of State, becoming the first Cabinet member in President Trump's second term to be approved. The former Florida Senator received a 99-0 vote, with no opposition from either party. Earlier, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 22-0 to advance his nomination. Rubio, a Cuban-American, is the first Hispanic to hold the position. He replaces Antony Blinken. Rubio was sworn in by Vice President J.D. Vance shortly after President Trump's inauguration speech. Known for his hawkish stance on China, strong support for Israel, and tough views on Cuba and Venezuela, Rubio pledged to prioritize American interests in foreign policy, stating, 'The priority of the Department of State of the United States is going to be the United States.' He emphasized promoting peace through strength without abandoning U.S. values. His first bilateral meeting as Secretary of State will be with India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
