Madison Keys, 29, Defeats World No.1 Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to Win Australian Open
Jan 25, 2025, 02:05 PM
Madison Keys claimed her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, defeating world No.1 and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in a thrilling final that lasted 2 hours and 5 minutes at Rod Laver Arena. The 29-year-old American, seeded 19th, denied Sabalenka a third consecutive Australian Open title. Keys' impressive run to the championship included victories over major champions Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek. She becomes the first American woman to defeat a No.1 seed in a Grand Slam final since Serena Williams in 2012. Keys' husband and coach, Bjorn Fratangelo, was present to celebrate her milestone victory. Sabalenka showed frustration after the loss by smashing her racket.
