FDA Authorizes Marketing of 20 ZYN Nicotine Pouches by Philip Morris International for First Time
Jan 16, 2025, 09:32 PM
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the marketing of 20 ZYN nicotine pouch products, marking the first time the agency has approved such items. These products, manufactured by Philip Morris International and marketed by its Swedish Match unit, are small synthetic fiber pouches containing nicotine designed to be placed between a person's gum and lip. They were approved following an extensive scientific review. The FDA determined that these products meet the public health standard required by the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, citing their potential to benefit adults who use cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products by posing a lower risk of cancer and other serious health conditions compared to traditional tobacco products. The authorization includes 10 flavors in two nicotine strengths, 3 milligrams and 6 milligrams. Despite the approval, the FDA emphasized that these products are not considered safe and will closely monitor their marketing and use, particularly among youth, to ensure compliance with marketing restrictions aimed at preventing youth access and appeal.
