A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan near Chiayi County early Tuesday, causing minor injuries and some structural damage. The earthquake, which occurred at 12:17 a.m. local time, had its epicenter 12 kilometers north of Yujing, with a depth of about 9.7 kilometers. According to reports, 27 people were injured, with injuries ranging from minor bruises and cuts to those requiring hospital treatment. In Tainan's Nanxi District, a house collapsed, trapping 11 people who were subsequently rescued. The earthquake also led to the collapse of ceilings in several homes in the area. In Chiayi City, CCTV footage showed goods falling from shelves due to the shaking. The Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC evacuated workers from some of its factories in response to the quake. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey provided varying magnitude readings, with the former reporting a magnitude of 6.4 and the latter a magnitude of 6.0. No major damage was reported, and the region remains on alert for potential aftershocks.
