FDA Authorizes 20 ZYN Nicotine Pouch Products by Philip Morris International, Including 10 Flavors

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the marketing of 20 ZYN nicotine pouch products following an extensive scientific review. The agency determined that these products, which are the first nicotine pouches to receive such authorization, pose a lower risk of cancer and other serious health conditions compared to cigarettes and other smokeless tobacco products. The FDA's decision was based on evidence showing that ZYN pouches contain substantially lower amounts of harmful constituents. The authorization applies to adults aged 21 and older, and the FDA will closely monitor youth use and the company's compliance with marketing restrictions. Philip Morris International, through its subsidiary Swedish Match, is required to adhere to strict marketing rules to prevent youth appeal, including not using mass-market advertising on radio and TV and employing actors or models no younger than 35 years old for marketing. The FDA emphasized that while these products are less harmful than traditional tobacco products, they are not considered safe, and youth should not use them. The authorization covers 10 different flavors, including coffee, mint, and menthol.
