Tech Giants Pledge Enhanced Efforts Against Online Hate Speech in EU Under Code of Conduct+ and DSA
Jan 20, 2025, 05:18 PM
Major tech companies including Meta's Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, and others have agreed to enhance their efforts to combat online hate speech in the European Union. This commitment comes through the adoption of a revised Code of Conduct on Countering Illegal Hate Speech Online, now referred to as the 'Code of Conduct+', which has been integrated into the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission announced that the updated code aims to strengthen platforms' handling of illegal hate speech and ensure effective enforcement of the DSA. The signatories have pledged to review at least two-thirds of reported problematic content within 24 hours and to engage with specific transparency commitments regarding measures to reduce hate speech prevalence, including the use of automatic detection tools.
