Syrian Rebels Expel PKK/YPG from Deir al-Zour After Intense Fighting
Dec 11, 2024, 08:35 AM
Syrian rebels have announced the capture of Deir al-Zour, a strategic city in eastern Syria, from the US-backed Kurdish forces. The city was previously occupied by Kurdish forces who had moved in on December 6 following the collapse of the Syrian government's military presence. Rebel commander Hassan Abdul Ghany confirmed the takeover, stating that opposition forces have now secured control over Deir al-Zour. Celebrations and parades have been reported in the city following the Kurdish militia's withdrawal. The Syrian opposition has also claimed to have expelled the PKK/YPG from the city after intense fighting. The area remains cut off from communications, with internet connectivity reported as very weak.
