Trump Administration Dismisses 11 Book Ban Complaints, Eliminates 'Book Ban Coordinator' Position

The U.S. Department of Education under the Trump administration has dismissed 11 complaints related to so-called 'book bans' that were filed during the Biden administration. The complaints, which alleged that the removal of certain books from school libraries created a 'hostile environment for students,' were deemed 'meritless' by the current administration. The Department of Education also announced the elimination of the 'book ban coordinator' position, which was established by the Biden administration to advise school districts against removing materials from library shelves over civil rights concerns. Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor stated that the department is restoring the fundamental rights of parents to direct their children's education, emphasizing local control over public education. The department also rescinded all guidance related to the theory that removing age-inappropriate and sexually explicit books from libraries may violate civil rights laws.
