Starbucks Reverses Open-Door Policy in North American Cafes, Requires Purchase to Linger Under CEO Brian Niccol
Jan 13, 2025, 11:10 PM
Starbucks Corp. has introduced a new policy across its North American cafes, requiring patrons to make a purchase in order to linger in the stores or use the restrooms. This change reverses the company's 2018 open-door policy, which allowed anyone to use its facilities without buying anything. The new code of conduct, aimed at enhancing the guest and staff experience, also prohibits harassment, violence, smoking, and panhandling. Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson stated that the new rules are designed to prioritize paying customers and create a more comfortable environment for everyone. The policy shift comes under the leadership of new CEO Brian Niccol, who is pushing to improve store environments and address safety concerns that led to the closure of 16 stores in 2022 due to issues like drug use and disruptive behavior.
