EU Mandates USB-C Ports by 2024; iPhone 15 Adopts Standard to Reduce E-Waste
Jan 10, 2025, 11:06 PM
The European Union has implemented a mandate requiring all small and medium-sized electronic devices to adopt USB-C charging ports by December 28, 2024. This regulation aims to reduce electronic waste, provide faster charging speeds, improve data transfers, and eliminate the dependency on proprietary charging systems. As a result, Apple has transitioned to USB-C ports for its iPhone 15 lineup, which launched on September 22, 2024, moving away from its proprietary Lightning connector. The mandate applies to phones, tablets, cameras, and other portable devices, offering consumers more flexibility in choosing charging accessories. Apple has previously resisted the transition, citing environmental concerns and potential revenue loss from its MFi certification program for Lightning accessories.
