Biden to Sign Social Security Fairness Act, Repealing WEP and GPO, Restoring Benefits to 3 Million Retirees
Jan 5, 2025, 02:58 PM
President Joe Biden is set to sign the Social Security Fairness Act into law on January 5th, after moving up the signing date. The legislation, which passed last month, will repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), restoring full Social Security benefits to nearly 3 million U.S. retirees, including teachers, firefighters, and police officers. The Act aims to rectify decades-long disparities and past payment discrepancies in Social Security benefits for public sector employees. This may be the last major piece of legislation President Biden signs into law.
