Magnitude 5.5 Nevada Earthquake Felt From Las Vegas to Bay Area

A preliminary magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Yerington, Nevada, east of Carson City, at approximately 3:08 p.m. on Monday, according to the USGS. The quake, later downgraded to magnitude 5.5, was felt across parts of Nevada and Northern California, including Reno, Sparks, Sacramento, the Bay Area, and as far south as Las Vegas. The earthquake was shallow, at a depth of about 8 kilometers. A pair of aftershocks followed at magnitudes 3.2 and 2.5. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Cal OES is coordinating with local, state, and federal partners to assess impacts and provide any needed resources following the earthquake. The ShakeAlert system was activated, delivering wireless emergency alerts that provided up to six seconds of advance notice in some areas.
