Russia to Buy Gas from Europe for Transnistria's 11-Day Supply via Moldovagaz
Jan 20, 2025, 09:27 AM
Russia has agreed to purchase gas from the European market to supply Transnistria, a pro-Russian separatist region in Moldova, amid an ongoing energy crisis. The decision comes after the closure of the Ukrainian gas pipeline, which left Transnistria without gas supplies. The gas, expected to last only 11 days at the current rate of consumption, will be delivered through Moldovagaz, a company controlled by Russia but regulated by Moldova. Transnistria's leader, Vadim Krasnoselsky, has stated that the region is prepared to receive and pay for the gas through Moldovagaz. However, Moldovan President Maia Sandu has criticized these supplies as illegal, citing violations of international sanctions and Moldovan law, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
