Largest Private Bathhouse from 2,000 Years Ago Unearthed in Pompeii's Regio IX
Jan 17, 2025, 11:02 AM
Archaeologists have unearthed a large private thermal bath complex in Pompeii, described as a 'once in a century' discovery. The complex, located within a private house in the Regio IX area, is the largest private bathhouse ever found in the ancient city, dating back 2,000 years ago. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, highlighted that the bathhouse was connected to a banquet hall, suggesting it served as a venue for social gatherings where the owner could display wealth and influence. The bathhouse included hot, warm, and cold rooms, accommodating up to 30 people.
