G7 Backs Inclusive Syrian Transition, Calls for Assad Accountability

The Group of Seven (G7) leaders have expressed their readiness to support a political transition in Syria, aiming for an inclusive, non-sectarian government that respects the rule of law, human rights, and minority rights. This commitment follows the recent overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, whose regime was characterized by decades of oppression and human rights abuses. The G7's statement emphasizes the importance of holding Assad accountable for his crimes, including the use of chemical weapons, and calls for the preservation of Syria's territorial integrity and national unity. The transition process, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, is expected to lead to a government that guarantees transparency, accountability, and the safe return of the millions of Syrians who have fled the country. The United States, through Secretary of State Antony Blinken's regional tour, has also voiced support for an inclusive transition, ensuring stability and justice in post-Assad Syria. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has reiterated the UN's commitment to supporting this transition, highlighting the need for unity among Syrian leaders to ensure a smooth process.
