Parallel Cinema Pioneer and Padma Bhushan Awardee Shyam Benegal Dies at 90

Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of India's parallel cinema movement, has passed away at the age of 90 after a prolonged illness. He died on Monday at Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for chronic kidney disease. Benegal had celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14. His daughter, Pia Benegal, confirmed his death, acknowledging its inevitability. Honored with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991, Benegal was renowned for his significant contributions to Indian cinema, winning 18 National Awards. His acclaimed works include "Ankur," "Manthan," "Bhumika," "Nishant," "Mandi," "Trikal," "Zubeidaa," and the television series "Bharat Ek Khoj," celebrated for their realism and social commentary.
