2,000-Year-Old Headless Marble Statue of Woman Found in Garbage Bag in Thessaloniki

A Hellenistic-era statue, believed to be over 2,000 years old, was discovered inside a black garbage bag near a trash container in Neoi Epivates, Thessaloniki, northern Greece. The statue, a 31-inch (80 cm) marble figure of a woman without a head, was found by a 33-year-old man who promptly alerted the authorities. Initial assessments by archaeologists confirmed that the statue dates back to the Hellenistic period (320-30 BC). The artifact has been sent for further examination and will eventually be transferred to the local antiquities authority for preservation and study. The police have launched an investigation to determine who discarded the statue, briefly detaining a man for questioning who was later released without charge.
