New York AG Releases Footage of Officers Fatally Beating Handcuffed Inmate at Marcy Prison
Dec 28, 2024, 12:48 AM
New York State authorities have released body-camera footage showing corrections officers at Marcy Correctional Facility fatally beating inmate Robert Brooks while he was handcuffed and restrained. The footage, released by Attorney General Letitia James on December 27, depicts officers punching, kicking, and allegedly suffocating the 43-year-old during an incident on December 9. An initial autopsy indicated that Brooks died from asphyxia due to neck compression. Brooks died the following day at Wynn Hospital in Utica. The incident involved at least 13 correction officers and a nurse, and none have been criminally charged yet. Fourteen staff members have been fired. The event has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, with demands for the involved officers to be prosecuted. The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigations is conducting an inquiry into Brooks' death.
