USDA Finds Unsanitary Conditions at Boar's Head Plants After Listeria Outbreak Kills 10

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has documented unsanitary conditions at several Boar's Head deli meat plants, extending beyond the Jarratt, Virginia facility that was closed last year following a deadly listeria outbreak that hospitalized 60 people and resulted in 10 deaths. Newly released inspection reports from plants in New Castle, Indiana; Forrest City, Arkansas; and Petersburg, Virginia, detail multiple instances of meat and fat residue on equipment and walls, dripping condensation falling on food, mold, insects, and other issues dating back approximately six years. The USDA released these records in response to Freedom of Information Act requests from The Associated Press and other news organizations. Boar's Head officials have acknowledged that the violations found in these three factories do not meet their high standards, while emphasizing that their remaining plants continue to operate under normal USDA oversight. The company, based in Sarasota, Florida, has long marketed itself as a premier provider of deli meats and cheeses, promoting 'excellence that stands apart in every bite.' Following the outbreak, Boar's Head recalled over 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat deli meat and poultry, with about 2.6 million pounds recovered. Liverwurst processed at the Jarratt plant was identified as the source of the outbreak. The company faces multiple lawsuits related to the outbreak, and the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether criminal charges are warranted. In response, Boar's Head is hiring a 'food safety culture manager' to address these concerns.
