U.S. Indicts Ex-Syrian Officials Jamil Hassan and Abdul Salam Mahmoud for War Crimes Against Americans
Dec 10, 2024, 12:30 AM
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that a federal grand jury in Chicago has charged two former high-ranking Syrian government intelligence officials, Jamil Hassan and Abdul Salam Mahmoud, with war crimes against Americans and other civilians during the Syrian civil war. The indictment, unsealed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, accuses the officials of the alleged torture and inhumane treatment of civilian detainees, including U.S. citizens, at an airport near Damascus. Arrest warrants have been issued for the defendants.
