OpenAI Launches 'Operator,' $200/Month AI Agent Automating Web Tasks, Announces eBay Collaboration
Jan 23, 2025, 06:17 PM
OpenAI is preparing to release 'Operator,' a new ChatGPT feature that automates complex web-based tasks typically done through a browser, such as making restaurant reservations, planning trips, ordering groceries, and filling out forms. Operator uses its own browser to perform tasks on behalf of users, displaying a miniature screen that shows the browser and the actions being taken. The AI agent may ask follow-up questions to capture necessary details for the tasks. The feature is initially available as a research preview to ChatGPT Pro users in the U.S., who pay $200 per month, and will be rolled out to other users in the future. Operator is powered by a model called Computer-Using Agent (CUA), based on GPT-4o with vision capabilities and advanced reasoning, surpassing previous benchmarks. OpenAI is hosting a livestream at 10 am PT on January 23 to introduce and demo Operator. The agent can interact with various services, including ordering groceries from Instacart and is integrated with DoorDash, though it is not available for Gmail. eBay announced a new collaboration with OpenAI, anticipating that Operator will expand the reach of sellers.
