China Unveils J-36 Stealth Fighter Amid Taiwan Strategy Focus

China has unveiled two new-generation stealth fighter jets, the J-36 and another unnamed model, marking a significant leap in its military aviation capabilities. The J-36, developed by Chengdu Aerospace Corporation, made its debut on December 26, 2024, and features a tailless, stealthy design with a unique three-engine configuration. It includes advanced features such as a large internal weapons bay, enhanced AI-assisted systems, and hypersonic missile capabilities. The aircraft's design emphasizes stealth, range, and high-speed performance, potentially allowing supersonic cruise without afterburners. Analysts speculate that the J-36 is intended for air superiority and strike missions, supporting China's strategic goals, including regional dominance and the ability to counter U.S.-led air power in the Western Pacific, particularly in the Taiwan Strait. Additionally, Shenyang Aerospace Corporation has developed another stealth fighter, reportedly smaller and equipped with two engines. These advancements come alongside other military developments, such as the unveiling of the KJ-3000 early warning and control aircraft and the launch of the Type 076 amphibious assault ship.
