Biden Transfers 11 Yemeni Detainees to Oman, Guantanamo Population Now at Record Low of 15
Jan 6, 2025, 10:21 PM
The Biden administration has transferred 11 Yemeni detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to Oman, significantly reducing the prison's population to 15, the lowest since it opened. Among those transferred is Moath al-Alwi, an artist known for crafting sculpture boats from found objects at the prison. The detainees, captured in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, are expected to start new lives in Oman. The transfer, confirmed by the Pentagon on Monday, comes just days before Biden leaves office. Amnesty International USA commended the move and urged the administration to end the practice of indefinite detention without charge or trial at Guantanamo.
