FAA Bans Drone Flights in 22 New Jersey Towns Until January 17, Designates Areas as National Defense Airspace
Dec 19, 2024, 11:57 AM
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a temporary ban on drone operations in multiple cities across New Jersey, effective until January 17, 2025. The ban, which covers nearly two dozen towns including Camden, Evesham, Burlington, Gloucester City, and others, was implemented due to 'special security reasons.' The restrictions prohibit unmanned aircraft systems from operating within one nautical mile of specified areas and up to 400 feet above ground level, unless operators receive special governmental permission. This action follows weeks of reported drone sightings across the region, which have raised concerns among residents and officials. The FAA has stated that it may use 'deadly force' against drones if they pose an 'imminent security threat,' and violators of the flight restrictions could face interception, detention, and potential criminal charges. These areas have been designated as 'National Defense Airspace.' The FBI has received over 5,000 tips regarding these sightings.
