Trump Calls China's DeepSeek AI a 'Wake-Up Call' as Tech Stocks Plunge
Jan 28, 2025, 05:00 AM
Speaking in Florida, President Donald Trump described the release of China's DeepSeek AI as a 'wake-up call' for American industries, urging them to be 'laser-focused on competing to win.' He acknowledged the challenge posed by the Chinese startup but viewed the development as positive, stating, 'We have the best scientists in the world. This is very unusual. We always have the ideas. We're always first.' Trump added that it is 'good that companies in China have come up with a cheaper, faster method of artificial intelligence.' The emergence of DeepSeek, which has rapidly gained popularity and surpassed ChatGPT to top Apple's App Store, has triggered a significant sell-off in tech stocks, including a 17% drop in Nvidia's shares. The disruption has prompted U.S. tech leaders, such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, to fast-track product releases in response.
