Bangkok Offers Free Buses and Electric Trains from January 27, 2025, to Combat Air Pollution Crisis
Jan 25, 2025, 06:42 AM
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced that public transport in Bangkok will be free for one week, starting January 27, 2025. This initiative aims to alleviate severe air pollution that has plagued the city, leading to the closure of hundreds of schools and prompting employees to work from home. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, confirmed that the free services will include buses and electric trains. In addition to this immediate measure, the Ministry of Transport is planning short, medium, and long-term strategies to combat air pollution, which includes vehicle inspections and maintenance. The National Police Chief has also mandated stricter enforcement against vehicles that exceed pollution limits, particularly those emitting black smoke.
