Jimmy Carter's Body Arrives in Washington for State Funeral on Thursday at National Cathedral
Jan 8, 2025, 07:29 AM
Former President Jimmy Carter's body arrived in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday for a state funeral, following days of tributes in his home state of Georgia. Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100 and was the longest-lived president in U.S. history, will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda until Thursday morning. His casket was transported on a horse-drawn caisson and placed atop the Lincoln catafalque in the Rotunda. A service was held in the Capitol Rotunda where members of Congress, Vice President Kamala Harris, and other dignitaries paid their respects. President Joe Biden has declared Thursday a National Day of Mourning, and most federal government executive departments and agencies will be closed. Carter's state funeral will take place at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, where Biden will deliver a eulogy. After the service, Carter's remains will be transported back to Georgia for a private funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, where he will be buried next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter.
