Trump Sworn In Without Hand on Bibles Held by First Lady

President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, January 20, 2025. During the inauguration ceremony, Trump recited the oath of office without placing his hand on the two Bibles held by First Lady Melania Trump, one of which belonged to Abraham Lincoln and the other was given to him by his mother. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath, reportedly beginning before Trump and his family were fully prepared. Images show Trump raising his right hand while his left hand remained at his side. The omission of placing his hand on the Bibles sparked online curiosity and discussion about its significance. However, since placing a hand on a Bible is traditional but not constitutionally required, the oath remains legally valid.
