A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, centering near Tainan City and Chiayi County, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center and Taiwan's Central Weather Administration. The quake occurred at 12:17 a.m. local time with a depth reported between 9.7 and 28 kilometers. Magnitudes ranging from 6.0 to 6.4 were reported. The epicenter was approximately 38 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Hall, about 80 kilometers from Tainan. The earthquake caused shaking as far as Taipei and has resulted in reports of building collapses in Tainan City, with rescue operations underway.
