Pete Hegseth was confirmed as the 29th United States Secretary of Defense after Vice President JD Vance cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate, resulting in a 51-50 final tally. The confirmation came late Friday night, marking only the second time in U.S. history that a Vice President has broken a tie to confirm a Cabinet nominee. Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky joined all Democrats in opposing Hegseth's nomination.
