Luigi Mangione Waives Extradition, Faces 11-Count Indictment Including First-Degree Murder and Terrorism in New York
Dec 19, 2024, 03:08 PM
Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has waived extradition and is being transported to New York City to face charges. Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania on December 9 following a manhunt that began after Thompson was shot on December 4 outside a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan. He is charged with an 11-count indictment, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism and two counts of second-degree murder, among other charges. Mangione's extradition was agreed upon during a court appearance in Blair County, Pennsylvania, on Thursday morning, and he is expected to be arraigned in New York as soon as Thursday afternoon. At the time of his arrest, Mangione was found with a 9 mm handgun with a 3D-printed receiver, a homemade silencer, two ammunition magazines, and live cartridges. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted of the state charges, and federal charges are also expected. Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, had been on the run for nearly a week before his arrest.
