Lithuania Commits to 5-6% GDP Defense Spending from 2026 to Build New Military Division
Jan 17, 2025, 11:51 AM
Lithuania has committed to increasing its defense spending to between 5% and 6% of its GDP from 2026 to 2030, as announced by the State Defense Council. The State Defence Council, which includes Lithuania’s top political and military leaders, has agreed to dedicate 5.5 percent of GDP to military spending over the coming five years. This decision, made in response to heightened security concerns, aims to bolster military capabilities. The move was endorsed by top political and military leaders, including President Gitanas Nauseda and Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, who called on NATO allies to follow suit. The increase is intended to accelerate the development of a new military division within the Lithuanian armed forces. In 2025, Lithuania plans to spend between 3% and 4% of its GDP on defense, and there are no plans to raise taxes to meet these military spending targets.
