JD(U) Removes Manipur Chief Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, Affirms Support for BJP-led Government
Jan 22, 2025, 11:14 AM
Reports emerged that Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) withdrew its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, as announced by the party's Manipur unit president Kshetrimayum Biren Singh. This move was expected to impact the stability of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state. However, the JD(U) national leadership refuted these claims, calling them misleading and unauthorized. National spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad stated that the party has removed Kshetrimayum Biren Singh from his position for indiscipline and reaffirmed its support for the BJP-led government in Manipur. The JD(U) had previously seen five of its six MLAs defect to the BJP after the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections; the lone JD(U) MLA will continue to support the government.
