The U.S. Congress has passed the Laken Riley Act, an immigration-related bill requiring ICE to detain undocumented migrants and noncitizens accused of certain crimes like theft. Named after 22-year-old Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was murdered last year by an undocumented immigrant, the act aims to clamp down on illegal immigrants committing nonviolent crimes. The House approved the bill with bipartisan support in a 263-156 vote, with 46 Democrats joining Republicans. The Senate had previously approved an amended version. The legislation now heads to President Trump's desk to be signed into law, marking his first legislative victory in his second term and initiating major immigration reform at the start of his administration.
