Apple to Replace Qualcomm Modems with In-House 5G Chips Starting in 2025
Dec 6, 2024, 04:55 PM
Apple is planning a three-year phased rollout of its own 5G modem chips, codenamed 'Sinope', 'Ganymede', and 'Callisto', to replace components from Qualcomm and reduce reliance on external suppliers. Starting in 2025, Apple intends to introduce 'Sinope' in the iPhone SE, iPhone 17 Air, and low-end iPads. While this initial modem will lack mmWave support and other advanced features, it will be tightly integrated with Apple's main chips to improve power efficiency and provide better support for satellite connectivity. In 2026, Apple plans to launch the 'Ganymede' modem with full mmWave capabilities for higher-end devices like the iPhone 18 and high-end iPads. By 2027, the company aims to complete the transition with 'Callisto', fully replacing Qualcomm's modems across all products. This strategic move could pave the way for cellular-enabled Macs and devices like the Vision Pro headset, as Apple explores integrating its modems into a wider range of products. The transition may significantly impact Qualcomm, which derives 22% of its revenue from Apple. Despite the shift, Apple will continue using parts from Broadcom and Skyworks in its devices. While the first generation of Apple's modems may initially lag behind Qualcomm's offerings, the company expects to achieve parity over time.
