Turkey Fines Google $75M (2.6B Lira) for Favoring Own Ad Platform Over Third-Party SSPs
Dec 13, 2024, 01:24 PM
Turkey's Competition Authority has imposed a significant fine of 2.61 billion lira ($75 million) on Alphabet Inc.'s Google for abusing its dominant position in the online advertising market. The fine was issued following an investigation that found Google unfairly favored its own supply-side platform (SSP) services, which are used for automating the sale of advertising space, at the expense of its competitors. This decision marks a violation of Article 6 of the Law on the Protection of Competition, which prohibits companies from abusing their dominant market positions. Google has six months to comply with the law and ensure third-party SSPs receive treatment no less favorable than its own services. Failure to comply will result in additional daily fines. Google has the right to appeal the decision within 60 days.
