Google has agreed to intensify its efforts to combat fake reviews in the UK following a five-year investigation by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The company will implement measures to detect and remove fake reviews, sanction businesses that use fake reviews to boost their star ratings, and ban individuals who repeatedly post fake or misleading reviews. Businesses found manipulating their ratings will have warning alerts added to their Google profiles, and their review function may be deactivated for at least six months if they continue such activities. Google is required to report its progress to the CMA over the next three years to ensure compliance with the agreement. The CMA's chief executive, Sarah Cardell, emphasized the importance of these changes for maintaining consumer trust and ensuring fairness for businesses.
