Vice President-elect JD Vance Resigns Senate Seat Effective Midnight; DeWine to Appoint Replacement
Jan 9, 2025, 10:30 PM
Vice President-elect JD Vance will resign his Senate seat effective midnight tonight, as he prepares for his inauguration alongside President-elect Donald Trump on January 20th. Vance submitted his letter of intent to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who will appoint a replacement to serve until a special election in 2026. Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted, a fellow Republican, is considering the appointment. Vance's resignation will temporarily reduce the Republican majority in the Senate to 51 members, as GOP Senator-elect Jim Justice has not yet been sworn in. Vance expressed his gratitude to the people of Ohio, stating, "To the people of Ohio, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate. When I was elected to this office, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I’ve made sure to live by that."
