Yemen's Houthis Limit Red Sea Attacks to Israeli Ships Amid Gaza Ceasefire, Warn U.S. and U.K.
Jan 20, 2025, 10:30 AM
Yemen's Houthi rebels have announced that they will limit their attacks in the Red Sea to only Israeli-affiliated ships, coinciding with the second day of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The decision was communicated via an email sent to shipping companies by the Houthi Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center. The Houthis have stated that attacks on Israeli-linked vessels will cease upon the full implementation of all phases of the ceasefire. However, they have warned that attacks on ships linked to the U.S. or U.K. could resume if these countries continue airstrikes in Yemen. The Houthis have been targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023, significantly impacting global shipping routes, particularly through the Suez Canal.
