Secret Service Ends 49-Year Detail for Jimmy Carter After Burial
Jan 12, 2025, 12:13 AM
The U.S. Secret Service has officially ended its longest-serving protective detail following the burial of former President Jimmy Carter in Plains, Georgia. Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024, had been under Secret Service protection for 49 years and two months, a record in the agency's history. His code name, "Deacon," reflected his devout Baptist faith. The detail concluded after Carter's state funeral at the National Cathedral, attended by all living former U.S. presidents, and his interment at his family home. The protection for Carter began in 1975 when he was a presidential candidate and continued throughout his post-presidency, which was marked by extensive humanitarian work and advocacy. Rosalynn Carter, his wife, was also protected under the code name "Dancer," until her death at age 96 in November 2023. The Secret Service praised Carter for his compassion, public service, and dedication to humanity.
