Sophie Hediger, a 26-year-old Swiss snowboarder and member of the national snowboard cross team, died in an avalanche at the Arosa mountain resort in Switzerland on Monday. Hediger, who had recently celebrated her 26th birthday on December 14, competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, participating in the women's snowboard cross and mixed team events. During the 2023-24 season, she achieved her first two World Cup podium finishes, with her best result being a second place in St. Moritz in January. The Swiss-Ski federation expressed deep condolences to Hediger's family, noting that her tragic death has cast a dark shadow over the Christmas period.
