Legendary CBS Broadcaster Greg Gumbel Dies at 78 After Cancer Battle

Greg Gumbel, a legendary sports broadcaster and longtime CBS Sports anchor, has died at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer, as confirmed by his family. A Chicago native and graduate of Loras College, Gumbel's career spanned over five decades, during which he became a prominent figure in sports broadcasting. He was known for his work as a play-by-play announcer and studio host for NFL games, college basketball, and the NCAA Tournament. Gumbel made history in 2001 as the first Black network broadcaster to call play-by-play for a major sports championship during Super Bowl XXXV. He also hosted CBS's coverage of multiple Super Bowls, the Winter Olympics, and Major League Baseball. Gumbel was affiliated with the March of Dimes and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital for decades. He missed the 2024 NCAA Tournament due to family health issues. His contributions to sports broadcasting earned him numerous accolades, including Emmy Awards and the 2007 Pat Summerall Award. His family described him as a man of stoicism, grace, and positivity, leaving behind a legacy of love and inspiration. He is survived by his wife, Marcy, and daughter, Michelle.
