Spain Officially Bans Biological Males from Women's Sports
Dec 6, 2024, 06:10 PM
Spain has officially banned biological males from competing in women's sports, marking a significant policy shift in the country's approach to transgender participation in sports. This decision comes amidst a backdrop of international debate, with over 40,000 people urging the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to maintain women's sports for women. A UN report highlighted that transgender athletes have won more than 890 medals across 29 sports, leading to arguments by the UN rapporteur on violence against women that sports federations allowing such participation infringe upon the rights of female athletes. In Spain, the ruling party's proposal for a ban was criticized by activists as being too restrictive, but the ban has now been implemented.
