Adam Schiff and Andy Kim Sworn In Early to Senate; Kim Is First Korean American Senator
Dec 9, 2024, 10:24 PM
Adam Schiff of California and Andy Kim of New Jersey were sworn into the U.S. Senate on December 9, 2024, three weeks ahead of their scheduled terms. Both were appointed by their respective governors—Gavin Newsom and Phil Murphy—to fill vacancies left by retiring Senator Dianne Feinstein and convicted Senator Bob Menendez. Schiff, a long-serving House member and former Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, aims to promote bipartisanship in the Senate. Kim, a three-term congressman who defeated Republican businessman Curtis Bashaw in the November election, becomes the first Korean American senator in U.S. history. Vice President Kamala Harris, in her first appearance on Capitol Hill since the election, administered the oath of office to both senators during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.
