In the wake of the Southport attack, the UK government is set to introduce stricter measures for online knife purchases. Axel Rudakubana, who admitted to murdering three young girls in Southport last July, was able to buy a kitchen knife on Amazon at the age of 17, despite existing laws prohibiting the sale of most knives to under-18s. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has described this as a 'total disgrace' and announced plans to require online retailers to ask buyers for two types of identification, including an ID document and a live video to prove their age. Amazon has launched an 'urgent investigation' into how Rudakubana was able to purchase the knife used in the attack. The government's proposed measures are part of a broader effort to combat rising youth violence and extremism, with the new rules expected to be incorporated into the upcoming Crime and Policing Bill.
