In the College Football Playoff National Championship at the Rose Bowl, Ohio State is dominating undefeated Oregon with an early 24-0 lead. By the end of the first quarter, the Buckeyes led 14-0, amassing 233 total yards to Oregon's 37, and averaging 11.7 yards per play. Quarterback Will Howard completed 8 of 12 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter. Freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith recorded four catches for 118 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, setting a Big Ten record for most receiving touchdowns by a true freshman. Early in the second quarter, Ohio State extended its lead with another touchdown pass from Howard to Smith, bringing his totals to five catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns with 10:28 remaining in the second quarter.
