Iranian Political Prisoners Ehsani and Hassani Face Imminent Execution at Ghezel Hesar After Evin Transfer
Jan 26, 2025, 08:38 PM
Two political prisoners, Behrouz Ehsani, aged 70, and Mehdi Hassani, aged 48, have been transferred from Evin Prison to Ghezel Hesar Prison in Iran, where they face imminent execution. The transfer occurred on January 26, 2025, and was carried out without prior notice. Both men were sentenced to death for alleged membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), with their death sentences upheld by Iran's Supreme Court three weeks prior. Ehsani and Hassani were subjected to torture and other forms of ill-treatment following their arrests in 2022, and their trials were criticized for being grossly unfair. In response to their transfer, inmates at Evin Prison staged protests, chanting slogans against the regime. Amnesty International has called for the immediate halt of these executions, citing the arbitrary nature of their detentions and serious violations of fair trial standards. The European Parliament has also condemned the systematic repression of human rights in Iran and demanded the abolition of the death penalty.
