EU Extends Russia Sanctions for Six Months After Hungary Drops Objection
Jan 27, 2025, 11:24 AM
The European Union has agreed to extend sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, following Hungary’s decision to lift its opposition to the move. EU foreign ministers reached the agreement on Monday, extending the sanctions for another six months. Hungary, which had previously threatened to veto the sanctions' renewal, backed down after receiving guarantees on energy security from the European Commission, which will also ask Kyiv for guarantees on maintaining oil and gas transit to the EU. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the agreement, stating that the sanctions will continue to deprive Moscow of revenues to finance its war.
